Why Being Beautiful Matters

What is beauty? We know beauty as Pippa Middleton, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga, yet none of these gorgeous ladies look alike. We can’t trace beauty to one hair color, eye shape, or body size. Beauty is everywhere, yet so selective at the same time. Yet science claims to have finally cracked the key ingredient to being attractive; blame it all on symmetry.

If the physical features you possess are symmetrical to one another, the rule of science simply states you are beautiful. And isn’t that what everyone wants to be? Attractive people live easier lives; more people will like, respect, and give them attention. Beautiful people even earn more money and have an easier time finding employment; a study out of NEWSWEEK, found 57% of managers agreed that being unattractive increases the difficulty of getting hired. In a culture that values looks above most other traits, it’s hard to be ugly. Considering 65% of women spend more than $50 prepping for a date, I’d say the majority agrees.

But then have you ever noticed that you no longer know if your best friend is ‘pretty’ or not? Or that big nose your friend has, the one you noticed so much at first, doesn’t even cross your mind now. Once we know someone from the inside out, our interpretations of their physical appearance become crowded with biases. Someone with a heart of gold might appear far more beautiful to those that know her than a passing stranger on the street.

It takes a period of time to get to know someone this well. The majority of our most important encounters are with people who only know us by a first impression, judged largely from appearance alone. The worst is there’s hardly anything humans can do to stop it; see our brains are wired to interpret the world in a quick, organized fashion where everything fits in a per-established category. This is how stereotypes come into play; the general public views beautiful people as nice, healthy, and clean. Therefore, when our eyes see a beautiful person our brains go to work categorizing them as this. Even if we remain unaware, this naturally changes how we interact with people based on phenotype alone.

Of course this doesn’t mean everyone should conform to whatever the media has proclaimed as “beautiful” in order to have a successful life. There are all types of beauties out there. Big, small, freckled, fat, pale, pinched, anyone can be beautiful. 300,000 members on the dating site, eHarmony, rank a girls appearance 14% higher if she makes him laugh. Remember, a bright smile and a warm sense of humor paired with confidence make even the dullest diamonds sparkle.

I have been browsing online more than 2 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.
It’s pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the web
will be much more useful than ever before.
